KENYA REJECTS SOMALIA’S PLEA FOR MILLITARY HELP
Posted by kenyantykoon on June 23, 2009
For the longest time now, Somalia has been having political unrest. So it should come as no surprise that militants are trying to overturn the current gvernment. To combat this threat to government the Somali parliament speaker Sheikh Adan Madowe called on Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Yemen to send in their military forces to help government troops stop Islamist militants from taking over. This was on saturday. This plea for help came hours after Mr Mohamed Hussein Adow, a powerful member of parliament who was leading the fight against the Islamists, was killed Friday in the north of the city. Two days before this incident, Mr Omar Hashi Adan, minister forl internal security was killed in Central Somalia.
But our Kenyan government spokesman Mr. Alfred Mutua told CNN that “Kenya doesn’t engage in military support to our neighbors.” He said that any such support would be under the umbrella of the African Union(AU).”
Even though he did refuse somalia’s plea he whoever did say that “kenya’s options were open” meaning that Kenya could offer other types of assistance, not just military. (personally I second this move because it doesnt make any sense to sacrifice the lives of our soldiers in a pointless civil war, seeing that Kenya has very little to gain fron it. Let the AU take car of this mess. i mean, thats wh it was formed wasn’t it? )
